Here we are eating lunch

Monday Hikers and Friends,

We had a great hike today. The sun was shining and there was just enough snow. It was really beautiful. It was a little slippery, so we put on our “Micro Spikes”. It was a little cold, but we warmed up as soon as we started hiking. There were nine of us. There were four Carols, Ginny, Joy, Linda, Sue, Richard and myself. There were beautiful views almost every minute.

Hi Hikers,

I was expecting an “Indian Summer” hike up this short trail to visit my friends, the very wooly mountain goats. However, they seem to listen to a different weatherman than do I. They were hunkered down out of sight.

It wasn’t raining very hard and it wasn’t cold either. At this point we had already overcome the temptation to slip on down to “The Halfway House Cafe” in Brinnon and gorge on hot, fresh berry cobbler alamode all day, so, here we go……………………………………….

Hi Hikers,

Are you enjoying this summer weather? It seemed a little cool as we left the trailhead, but that was soon to be a good thing as the trail went to a 20 percent grade early on. Not many pictures taken in the low land, but above the timber line were lots of views.

We stopped at the grocery in Quilcene to adjust our calories on the way home!

Happy Hiking

Whiskey Ben Elwha Hike

Whiskey Ben Elwha Hike

There were between 15 and 20 hikers that gathered for the Elwha hike. It was overcast on the way to the trail, but the sun came out when we got to Sequim. Our car saw a small bear as we approached the trail head parking lot. I think some other hikers may have had a bear encounter at one of the cabins.

Boulder Lake

Boulder Lake

Bolder Lake is a clear green gleaming jewel beneath its namesake peak in the north-central region of Washington’s Olympic Mountains. Visited by Monday Hikers many times in the past, it was again the destination of their hike on July 26, 2010. The day was warm from the start and although old snowdrifts still edged the lake on its southern shore, the water was warm enough to invite swimmers – Gunda and John – in for a refreshing dip, before hiking back to the trailhead.

Hello Monday Hikers and Friends,

Four of us met at the park and ride the morning after the 4th of July. We weren’t the brightest foursome, all having stayed up late to catch the fireworks the night before. The long drive to Hoodsport seemed less so due to discussions of various hikes, campouts and climbs, many past but some soon to be executed. Sue and Frank, long-time explorers of the Olympics, related some favorite trips and notable experiences.

There was lively discussion about the Mount Adams climb, which Laura does next week, and Frank and Neil will do on August 6. We pulled into the Big Creek campground parking lot expecting to see at least one familiar vehicle that would have come from the Bremerton Airport. But neither of the cars parked there was familiar.

Thinking we were the only Mountain Goats in the area, we put on our gear and after a bit of exploration, found the trailhead for the Big Creek Loop Trail. It was cool under the tall trees but Frank, confident we would break through the low cloud cover, was wearing shorts. Laura was not so optimistic.

Deer Ridge is a medium length hike, going 5.2 miles to Deer Park, but adds about .5 miles to the top of Blue Mountain, if that extension is taken.

Starting elevation is 2500’ at Slab Camp, going up to 5200’ at Deer Park, and Blue Mountain is 6007’

This hike had everything a good hike could contain – sun, fog, glorious mountains, and beautiful flowers.

Lower Big Quilcene

Monday started out to be a sunny day for the 14 Hikers. As we left Camp Jolly it was over cast but no rain. At least it was only slightly muddy — nothing like we have hiked thru on the last 2 Mondays. This was a wildflower hike — the pictures include Rhodies, Columbine, Star False Solomon’s Seal, and Canadian Dogwood or Bunchberry. We saw many other flowers along the way.

Grey Wolf Hike

There were 18 Hikers that headed out to Grey Wolf. We only had a little rain at lunch. There were lots of flowers — mostly Trilliums and Bleeding Hearts. And Mark did a little trail maintenance. The river was raging. We hiked until the trail was impassable — about 4+ miles in.
